What Causes The Common Headache
Learn How to Control Your Headaches (here)
There can be very few of us who have not suffered from a headache at some point and yet, in spite of the fact that they are so common, their cause remains something of a mystery. Further, though we generally simply talk about a headache there are in fact several different types of headache.

Migraines for instance affect about ten percent of the US population (roughly twenty-eight million individuals) and attack three times more women than men. And yet, in spite of the fact that such a large section of the population regularly suffers from migraines, we still have little idea about just what causes them. Naturally there are various theories, the latest of which is that they are caused by the interaction of chemicals within the brain such as serotonin and the nerve cells of the brain, but we really do not know for for sure whether or not this is the cause.
Cluster headaches, which are much less common but also far more intense than Migraine Headaches, affect about one person in every three hundred and tend to afflict men far more than women. Again however we have only a tentative idea about what leads to the stabbing pain which is often felt behind one eye in these particularly painful headaches. Some people suspect that the cause could be a defect in the hypothalamus but, at the moment, there is no firm evidence in support of this theory.
The commonest form of headache is what we usually call ordinary or tension-type headaches and again these are only partly understood. In this case the list of possible causes is extremely long and includes everything from the food we eat to how stressed we are. Attempting to isolate a specific cause has eluded us so far however and just what leads to the ordinary everyday headache is still something of a mystery.
Perhaps the only saving grace is that we do have a large number of medications available to deal with the different types of headache and the majority of these are both effective and safe for most sufferers.
Migraine headaches have long proved difficult to treat and the original ergot drugs used to treat them had varying degrees of success. These drugs were then largely replaced by triptan drugs which were more effective but which unhappily carried several disadvantages. Now however the second generation of triptans are proving to be safe, have fewer side effects and work well for the majority of sufferers.
There has also been an increase in the use of preventive medicines for migraines like beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, anti-seizure medications, anti-depressants and various other drugs that are commonly used to treat other well known conditions. For some people these will Stop Headaches from occurring at all, while for other people they act to reduce the frequency with which headaches occur.
For ordinary headaches over-the-counter drugs like paracetamol and aspirin (which have been around for more than one hundred years) and newer medicines like ibuprofen provide safe and effective relief in the majority of cases. For people who suffer from regular headaches though care has to be taken as even the humble aspirin can produce side effects if taken too frequently.
Despite the fact that there is still a great deal that we do not know about what causes really bad headaches the fact that we can treat them effectively is comforting to the many sufferers and especially to the large number of people who are afflicted by often extremely debilitating Migrane Headaches. However, surprisingly enough, only about half of all those who suffer from migraines ever seek medical advice and so there are literally millions of individuals today needlessly suffering in silence.
If you suffer from headaches and find that simple over-the-counter medicines such as paracetamol or aspirin do not work then, instead of sitting and suffering in silence, drop in to see your doctor who will almost certainly be able to help to relieve your headaches.

Handbook of Headache (Hardcover) $456.94 Headache disorders are among the most common disorders of the nervous system. They are pandemic and, in many cases, they are recurrent and can accompany the patient for the whole life. These disorders impose a substantial burden on headache sufferers, on their families and on society: the individual impact is measured by the frequency and severity of attacks, while the societal burden is measured in terms of loss of activity at work and school as well as of costs for the health system. As a matter of facts, headaches are ranked in the top ten, and maybe the top five, causes of disability worldwide: they are therefore extraordinarily common.Population-based studies have mostly focused on migraine, which, even if it is the most frequently studied headache disorder, is not the most common . Other types of headache, such as the more prevalent TTH and sub-types of the more disabling chronic daily headache, have so far received less attention and need to be better investigated. This book will provide a useful tool to a wide medical population, who is required specific skills to diagnose and manage these frequent and often disabling disorders .Furthermore, it could also represents a compendium for medical students who are usually introduced to this topic through multidisciplinary university programmes. |
