It started with tightness in my hip flexors that no amount of stretching could relieve. I took the obvious measures in the form of reduced running and cardio exercises, spent more time for yoga and finally cut down the number of days for workouts, yet no relief seemed to be coming my way.

Let's travel two months ahead. My lower back would be stiff, like a rock in the mornings: it hurt and took pretty long to loosen itself. Soon, my hamstrings followed behaving the same way, getting taut and would hurt when I bent down to tie my sneakers. I especially felt this in the mornings This pushed me over the edge.

I like to think I've always been athletic, at least throughout my adulthood.  I simply adore an activity that causes me to sweat. I adore running and biking. I had been teaching spinning classes ever since spinning was introduced. Let me tell you that without any formal training, I participated in triathlons and half-marathons, just for kicks. I just would get up, felt like going for a race and joined others, just like that.

Well, I used to be, to say the least. I get irked by physical limitations. I'm just 45 years of age and that's new 29, no? .

My husband (I met him at one of the 5K races, but that's of the record), insists on my adding that it was not only the my hamstring that tightened, my personality too! . In the trickle-down theory, if I cannot do my regular daily workouts, everyone in my family suffers.

I do believe in divine intervention though and about this time I discovered the foam roller exercises through a fabulous New York City teacher, Susan Hitzmann, owner of Longevity Fitness, Inc. I certainly believe in divine intervention and thru His grace happened to learn of the foam roller exercises through a remarkable New York City teacher named Susan Hitzmann; the owner of   Longevity Fitness Inc.. She organizes a program, and very appropriately calls it M.E.L.T. that means  Myofascial Energetic Length Technique. Now, eva foam roller is all I want to use.

I coincidentally ended up in one of her many workshops about fascia and what to do about it.   She employs tools , many on the foam roller  for adding length and thus easing muscular uneasiness. Turns out that it wasn't just my muscles that were tight but the overlying and surrounding sheath of fascia that were giving me problems.

Now, now, what's fascia? Imagine having a wet suit that comfortably and warmly sits on your muscles, as if a net or a web  Some people have more than others.

She educated us on how to roll on a foam roller to re-hydrate the body to bring forth a sense of length, space and release. Man! It was a profound release too; like unbuttoning your jeans after a big meal.

Just one workshop and I got obsessed! . I got myself a foam therapy roller, which looks like a yoga mat rolled up, only bigger and made of foam.

My muscles began to lose their stiffness, causing my lower back to loosen up and that encouraged a more comfortable sleep. This enabled me get up in the mornings without that feeling of uneasiness in the body as I felt rested and flexible.  I could start again with my daily cardio routine and strength training. End of the day, my moods started getting back to normal. I was nicer to my husband and kids, and in essence, I got my life back.
