How To Avoid Common Golf Injuries And Headaches
Golf is meant to be a relaxing and low impact sport, although with the requirement for a powerful strike to the golf ball, golf can become a bit of a strenuous activity. Golf can be related to some physical and even mental stresses.
In order to enjoy playing golf you need to understand that you are going to have your good days and your bad ones too. Not getting stressed out over these is key to enjoying the game.
For the physical side though there are a number of areas that you could struggle with depending on your build and technique. There are a lot of muscle groups involved in swinging your golf club as well as all the walking you’ll be doing. There are a few injuries that are common to golfers and many of them can be prevented.
Back Pain
The motion of a golf swing means that your back will be heavily involved - but poor posture or an incorrect swing motion can mean your back suffers as a result. Learning to stand correctly and practicing your swinging motion can get your body used to the action and not cause you pain or discomfort.
Knee Pain
Despite only walking around the course and being stood still for a large amount of the time, your knees can still come in for some punishment playing golf. Again with a poor swing or even a correct swing the transferral of weight and the twisting of the hip can put added strain on weak knees. If you have trouble with your knees then you may need to wear a support brace or try building strength up by bike riding.
Shoulder and Elbow Pain
Obviously your arm muscles and joints are used throughout every shot and can take quite a lot of stress over the 18 holes. Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow (same as tennis elbow just on the inside of the elbow as opposed to the outside) is common with players who tend to hit the ground, the edge of tee boxes or hard fairways. You can get shoulder related injuries also such as rotator cuff and even arthritis related issues.
UV damage
Depending on where you play golf and at what time of the year you may have to consider the sun. Many rounds of golf in the UK take place in the wind and rain but as you can be out on the course for several hours, when the sun is shining precautions should be taken against damage to the skin or heatstroke. Making sure you wear sun screen and have a bottle of water or juice in your golf bag will help you to stay cool.
As with virtually all sports, it is important to do some basic stretches and warm up your muscles before you hit your first drive, paying particular attention to your arms and back. After a round, if your back or shoulders are sore, get ice on them and relax afterwards to allow your muscles and joints to recover.
Golfers insurance is available if you would like peace of mind while you play. Golf insurance polices offer different levels of cover, however if you planning a golfing holiday, specialist golf travel insurance may be more suited to your needs.
