Power Failure for Immune Power Diet

Dr. Stuart Berger, a New York City psychiatrist, was different from most quacks since he was a graduate of two prestigious schools: Tufts University and the Harvard School of Public Health.

All throughout his bestselling book called “The Immune Power Diet”, he impressed readers with his medical training and constantly reminded them that he had the credentials to clout. His other contributions to the pop-medicine field include The Immune Power Cookbook”, “How to be Your Own Nutritionist”, and What Your Doctor Didn't Learn in Medical School.”

The title of the last book could very well apply to Berger himself for it was obvious that he had a lot to learn in medicine. His books prove one thing: you can't always rely on an author's credentials for sound nutrition information or medical advice. Speaking about its infamous alumnus, the Tufts University Diet and Nutrition Letter gave Berger's book a failing grade.

"When you read about (his background), you can't help but believe he has the word on losing weight, feeling great, and preventing disease. But be forewarned that his book is filled with unscientific claims and unwarranted advice about nutritional remedies for a host of problems," it said.

The Harvard Medical School Health Letter added that the book "should have been listed in the fiction category. What this book is selling is a collection of quack ideas about food allergies that have been around for decades. (It is) a rich collection of errors, both of fact and interpretation."

After reviewing Berger's book in the Wall Street Journal, Dr. Jean Mayer, professor of nutrition at Harvard for 26 years and president of Tufts University, had only one wish: "It is my hope," she said, "that no future graduate of the Tufts medical school will exhibit as little knowledge of nutrition as does Dr. Berger in his book."

What is the guiding principle of the Immune Power Diet? Berger said his diet plan would not only help people lose weight but "strengthen and revitalize" the body's immune system. By following his diet and taking expensive vitamin supplements, we are told we can fight diseases like asthma, hives, anxiety, headaches, insomnia, heart palpitations, arthritis, ulcers, and cramps.

The culprit in obesity and in many of life's ills, Berger wrote, is food sensitivity. What we eat can make or break the immune system and make us susceptible to many diseases, or so we are told. Berger blamed dairy products, wheat, brewers and baker's yeast, eggs, corn, soy products, and sugar for most of these problems.

To determine your food sensitivity, Berger recommended the leucocyte cytotoxic test (LCT). Here, white cells from a sample of blood are applied to about 200 microscope slides coated with dried extracts of various foods. Any change in the slides will supposedly reveal a person's sensitivity to a particular food.

The funny thing about this test is that almost everyone ends up being allergic to something. But this doesn’t prove anything since the US Food and Drug Administration, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and the American Academy of Allergy and Immunology, all say the test is useless in detecting food allergies.

To rebuild the immune system, Berger advised the use of multiple vitamin megadoses. He prescribed vitamins for jet lag, premenstrual tension, premature grey hair, and even brain power. However, Consumers' Union medical consultants said "there is no credible evidence that particular foods have either damaging or protective effects on the immune system. Nor is there evidence that extra doses of vitamins and other food supplements increase the body's resistance to disease."

In the end, Berger’s own diet failed to save the bestselling author or extend his life. Berger died in 1994 at the age of 40. He was over 300 pounds at the time of his death.
